PUBLIC PROTOCOL +
MEETING THE NEIGHBOURS
Public Protocol is the name of our handbook and shows you our way of doing it. We have developed a number of ways of working with local communities through extensive experience and we are always looking for better ways. This is a new way of engaging with our communities in delivering positive change. It is the way of entering into new social contracts with the communities affected by growth and change and empowering them with the sense of the possible.

We will show you what we do first, how we get the project up and running and what we do throughout the course of the project. We explain the tools we have to help and the extra things we can do to improve leadership and decision-making to ensure the best outcome for the project. There’s a lot of groundwork to do before a project really gets up and running – it’s this groundwork that will help to ensure that community involvement is effective. There are four basic rules of community involvement:
Participation needs to be honest, interactive and fun. We have developed a ‘participation toolkit’ with a range of techniques to ensure that we involve people in an imaginative and useful way. We will use all or some of these techniques depending on the place and the project. Each will be tailored to the special needs of the place. No project is ever the same so we may even need to invent new ways.
